A message from the South Huntsville Business Association
As we travel through the South Parkway construction zone, we usually think only of our own needs and our own schedules. But we also need to remember that the construction zone is occupied by people just like us. Construction workers, ALDOT monitors, and their coworkers. People who want to get home safely each day, just like we do. People with families at home, who want their loved ones to arrive home safely each day, just like our families do. People whose safety depends on each of us, our driving alertness, our driving safety habits, and our compliance with highway driving laws.
April 11-15, 2016, is National Work Zone Awareness Week.
National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) is an annual spring campaign held at the start of construction season to encourage safe driving through highway work zones. The key message is for road
users to use extra caution in work zones. This year's theme,
"Don't Be That Driver!" reinforces the message that motorists should
be constantly alert and prepared for dynamic changes in and around work zones.
Slow Down and Move Over where Workers are Present!
It's the Law!

This campaign is not just an abstraction, not just a nice idea. This campaign is about real life. Something happened early this morning in our own North Alabama Community that emphasizes the urgent need for this campaign. An ALDOT worker was killed, and a coworker injured, during a traffic collision in a construction zone on I-65, near the Tennessee River bridge. Just before the accident, these workers were relocating safety barrels. Tonight, that ALDOT worker will not be going home to his wife, their young son, and their little twins. Tomorrow, that ALDOT worker will not be working alongside his ALDOT colleagues. Instead, that family and those coworkers will be grieving.
As we drive through our own South Parkway construction zone:
Let’s remember the people who work in that construction zone.
Let's remember their families and coworkers
Let's send them safely home each day.
Let's remember the 2016 NWZAW theme:
Don't Be That Driver!
